REPTILES, BADGERS AND BUILDERS

House builders and developers are generally well aware of the importance of environmental surveys in gaining planning permission for new or mothballed building sites. When Bovis Homes decided to seek planning permission for such a site in East Anglia, ADAS was employed to complete surveys for bats, badgers and slow worms, and undertake a woodland assessment.

REPTILES, BADGERS AND BUILDERS

Challenge

To survey the site for protected species and to devise an acceptable long term wildlife management plan for those found to nhabit the site. This needed to satisfy both the planners and local wildlife groups.

Solution

In this particular instance badgers and slow worms were all found to be present on the site. The timing of the removal of protected species is vital and governed by the seasons and legislation. In this instance an artificial badger set was built away from the developable area and the badgers encouraged to leave their existing sett. A woodland management plan was devised, and the slow worms were removed in the spring to an enhanced woodland habitat on the site.

Results

All efforts were made to minimise disturbance to the badger population by creating the artificial badger sett almost 1 year prior to the closure of the existing sett; the badgers actually vacated their sett prior to its closure. The removal of slow worms to an immediately adjacent habitat was an ideal solution for that species. Management of the woodland area began with enhancementfor the slow worms and will continue with the creation of more glades. The presence of both green space and wildlife can now viewed as a sales advantage for the houses on this particular site.
