RPS Energy UXO Risk Assessment & Desk Based Services, PNZ-Wide Kuwait & Saudi Arabia,

RPS Energy Ltd was commissioned by Joint Operations (JO) in August 2009 to conduct a desk-based study followed by ground physical ERW survey of the Partitioned Neutral Zone (PNZ) for potential Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) contamination between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the State of Kuwait. The area was considered to offer a potential ERW and landmine risk, as this whole area was subject to extensive military activity during the 1991 Gulf War 1 conflict between the Kuwait Liberation Coalition forces and the State of Iraq, and has been the location of numerous post conflict clearance operations since 1991 and is known to contain ERW Contamination and is documented as such. Numerous commercial clearance tasks had been conducted since the state sponsored post conflict clearance programme. An example of one such project was conducted by a UK based Clearance Contractor in 2005/6 when they were tasked with the clearance of evaporation pits at Wafra for Exploration Logistics during the project 2,682,276m was cleared.

RPS Energy UXO Risk Assessment & Desk Based Services, PNZ-Wide Kuwait & Saudi Arabia,

The purpose of the overall survey was to assess the potential for ERW (Landmines/UXO) to be present within the PNZ Concession area. To quantify areas highlighted in the RPS desktop study as potential risk and to evaluate the implications of these factors upon future activities within the PNZ boundaries.

The PNZ Concession was considered to offer a potential ERW risk due to its location in the southern section of Kuwait (from Mina Al-Zour/Mina Saud in Kuwait) and the northern section of Saudi Arabia (to Khafji in Saudi).

This assessment was comprised of a desk based study, a review of all available documentation and records relating to UXO and landmines reported, followed by an onsite survey and full appreciation of the current levels of UXO / landmine contamination that remains within the region in general.

The overall project was successfully completed in February 2010.
