Solutions to reduce or eliminate determined problems are then designed and/or implemented. This requires knowledge of: the environment in general the detection and monitoring of pollutants and other environmental markers in air, water and soil the remedial processes for the treatment of pollution the legislative frameworks the management tools to efficiently organise the overall process. The postgraduate level programme in Environmental Diagnostics was established in 1993. It was designed to give graduates the above knowledge and develop it into commercially relevant skills. This approach was determined to be the most appropriate way to prepare science and engineering graduates to meet the increasing worldwide demand in industry, education and public sectors for environmental advisors and officers. Consultations with industry and the publication of the British Standard BS 7750 on Environmental Management Systems and the international equivalent ISO 14001 contributed to the initiation of the course and highlighted the future expansion of the environmental officer, advisor or even ‘diagnostician’ employment sector. This course is suitable for: Graduates with science or engineering related degrees keen to pursue careers in environmental diagnostics; or graduates currently working in environmental diagnostics keen to extend their qualifications; or individuals with other qualifications who possess considerable relevant experience. There are numerous benefits associated with undertaking a postgraduate programme of study within the Centre for Resource Management and Efficiency at Cranfield University.
