Course provider Cranfield University

Course overview

An ability to describe and quantify the meteorological and soil environment for a specific site is a necessary first step in the development and design of appropriate land management practices.

This course will focus on those soil and meteorological characteristics that directly affect soil fauna and vegetation survival, growth and development. The focus of the interactions is at a plot- and plant-scale.

Course description

This course will cover:

Measuring and quantifying the meteorological environment
formation and origin of soils, soil texture and structure, clay mineralogy, colloidal activity
soil physics: bulk density, soil moisture content, porosity, void ratio.

Water release characteristic, infiltration, soil water movement, saturated flow.

plant responses to solar radiation, temperature, drought and aeration stress
soil chemistry: soil pH, electrical conductivity, cation exchange capacity.

Soil biology: main groups of organisms and their functions; interactions between soil structure and biota.

On successful completion of this course the delegate will be able to:

Measure and quantify the meteorological environment (i.e. solar radiation, temperature, daylength and vapour pressure deficit) for a given location.

Identify soil textural classes and soil structure and evaluate their importance to soil management.

Comprehend basic physical properties of soil and its interaction with soil water.
Characterise soil pore water and its movement within soils.

Explain the principal responses of plants to solar radition, temperature, drought and aeration stress.

Conduct and evaluate basic soil chemical analysis.

Describe the main classes of organisms in soil and their functional importance in soil systems.
